West Ham United are closely monitoring Chris Smalling’s situation at Manchester United and want to sign him this summer, according to Metro.
The Hammers are in desperate need of a couple of new centre-halves, with links to Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson and Toulouse’s Issa Diop being mentioned over the last week.
However Smalling has been a name that has been linked with West Ham consistently over time, despite the fact the England international plays relatively regularly at United.
The former Fulham man’s future at Old Trafford will surely be down to the Red Devils’ transfer business this summer.
Should United bring in another centre-half, a move to West Ham could be appealing as Manuel Pellegrini’s men could offer the Englishman regular first-team football and the chance to be based back in the capital.
The Chilean has inherited a Hammers squad light on central defenders, with James Collins leaving the club over the course of the summer.
With Winston Reid suffering from frustrating injury issues last season also, adding a defender with experience such as Smalling would be a positive move.
