West Ham set to sign veteran defender Joel Veltman

West Ham United are closing in on a deal to sign veteran Dutch defender Joel Veltman, according to ExWHUEmployee. Nuno Espirito Santo is at the London Stadium.

The ‘really intelligent’ 34-year-old became a free agent earlier this summer following the expiry of his contract with Brighton & Hove Albion, ending a highly successful six-year stint.

West Ham’s recruitment staff identified Veltman as an ideal opportunistic target to bolster their squad without incurring a transfer fee.

With the Hammers looking to rebuild their defensive unit, adding an experienced Premier League player fits seamlessly into their summer strategy.

During his six seasons at Brighton, Veltman established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable and consistent defenders.

Having joined from Eredivisie giants Ajax in 2020 for a bargain £900,000 release clause, he went on to make 191 competitive appearances for the Seagulls and proved pivotal during Brighton’s rise in the top-flight, including their historic sixth-place finish.

Naturally a right-back who combines strong positional awareness with disciplined tackling, the 28-cap Netherlands international is equally adept at operating as a central defender in both a back four and a back three.

This versatility makes him a valuable asset for West Ham, offering immediate competition at full-back while providing reliable cover in the heart of defence.

Beyond his on-field contributions, Veltman brings elite leadership and European pedigree. Having progressed through Ajax’s famed youth academy—where he featured in 246 matches and won multiple Dutch league titles—Veltman possesses high football intelligence and composure on the ball.

Furthermore, his professionalism and community involvement off the pitch earned him widespread acclaim during his time on the South Coast.

As final contract details are ironed out, the Dutchman is expected to undergo a medical in East London before officially joining his new teammates, giving the Hammers a seasoned defensive anchor for the gruelling season ahead.
