West Ham United have opened formal talks with Nottingham Forest over a potential deal to bring Brazilian defender Morato to East London, according to ExWHUEmployee.
Negotiations between the clubs are focused on a loan agreement, with the main sticking point being the deal’s structure.
West Ham and Forest remain in talks over whether the move will be a straight season-long loan or include a conditional or mandatory purchase obligation.
The 25-year-old has emerged as a key target for West Ham due to his positional versatility. Naturally a left-sided centre-back, Morato is also comfortable at left-back, a dual role he developed at Benfica before moving to the City Ground in August 2024.
West Ham view Morato as an immediate and reliable solution to strengthen their defensive depth after recent squad changes.
His ability to play in both a back four and a back three provides crucial flexibility across a demanding schedule. Standing at 190cm, the Brazilian brings physical presence and aerial dominance.
For Nottingham Forest, approving a loan allows them to manage squad numbers while ensuring Morato continues to play regularly.
Forest officials, however, are seeking long-term financial guarantees if a buy clause is included. Having added defensive reinforcements this window, Forest see Morato’s potential departure as pragmatic so long as the financial terms are right.
With personal terms not expected to be an issue once the clubs agree on details, talks continue to resolve the loan conditions.
If negotiations are successful, Morato will undergo a medical and finalise his move to the London Stadium before the transfer deadline.
