West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville is hoping to return to the pitch as soon as possible after suffering yet another injury setback.
According to The Athletic, the 24-year-old is targeting a comeback ahead of West Ham’s Premier League contest against Aston Villa on March 22.
Summerville suffered a calf injury during West Ham’s dramatic penalty shootout victory over Brentford in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
The forward picked up the knock late in the second half of extra time but stayed on the pitch until the final whistle as Nuno Espirito Santo had already used all available substitutions.
Initial medical scans were carried out earlier this week, and the winger will undergo further assessment in the coming days.
As a precaution, he is expected to miss West Ham’s next Premier League fixture at home against title challengers Manchester City.
Summerville’s setback is a huge blow for West Ham
The timing of the injury is disappointing for both player and club, especially given that Summerville has been in fine form over the past few months.
Since January, he has been one of West Ham’s most influential attacking players, scoring seven goals and adding one assist in his last 13 appearances.
His performances have provided a much-needed spark for a team battling to stay in the top flight. People familiar with the situation say the Dutch winger is highly motivated to return as soon as possible.
Aside from helping West Ham’s battle against relegation, Summerville is also eager to strengthen his chances of earning a senior international call-up with the Netherlands national football team.
The former Leeds United forward has represented the Netherlands at youth level, from under-16s to under-21s.
His recent club form has reportedly placed him firmly in the frame for upcoming friendly matches against Norway and Ecuador later this month.
This is the latest setback in a long line of injury woes that have plagued the Dutchman.
