West Ham United fans have been reacting on Twitter to a report from The Mirror linking the Hammers with a summer move for West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans.

The centre-half could be available on the cheap given that he has a release clause in his contract which allows him to leave for £3 million if the Baggies are relegated from the Premier League.

That seems a likely scenario at present; Alan Pardew’s team are rooted to the foot of the table with 10 games left and are a full seven points adrift of safety.

Competition for Evans’ signature is expected to be stiff, with Manchester City and Arsenal both having shown interest in January, whilst Leicester City and Everton are also said to be eyeing up a move.

And as the close of the season draws near, the list of parties keen on a move for the Northern Ireland international will undoubtedly grow longer.

A product of Manchester United’s famed youth academy, Evans rose through the ranks at Old Trafford and, despite spending spells out on loan at Antwerp and twice with Sunderland, he became a dependable member of the first-team setup.

Since his sale to West Brom in 2015, the 30-year-old has been the bedrock of the Midlanders’ defence and was named as captain following the departure of Darren Fletcher last summer.

Whilst the Hawthorns side have struggled this term, Evans’ reputation has remained largely intact, as demonstrated by the calibre of teams linked with a move for his services.

Reaction from West Ham supporters to this news has been largely pessimistic, with few believing that there is much of a chance he will be tempted to make the switch to East London.

There have also been calls to look for younger reinforcements ahead of Evans, particularly given the Irons’ current ageing backline.
