Michail Antonio drew praise from swathes of West Ham United fans on Twitter after the 2-0 Premier League victory over Watford on Saturday.

The Englishman featured as a left wing-back in the absence through suspension of Arthur Masuaku, his first start for the club since a 3-2 defeat to Newcastle United before Christmas.

And he played an instrumental role in the opener with a surging run down the flank and a pinpoint cross that was met by the head of the in-form Javier Hernandez.

The Mexican now has three goals and an assist from his last four appearances in the top flight and could have put the Hammers into the lead even earlier had his excellent header not been ruled out for offside.

Joao Mario also had a chance to open his account for the club before the opener but saw his low effort blocked by goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis.

There was an element of good fortune for the Irons’ second of the afternoon, which was gleefully dispatched by the superb Marko Arnautovic.

The 28-year-old also missed a golden opportunity in the first half but he made amends when Aaron Cresswell blocked a ball into his path, controlling instantly and steering into the corner.

Victory took West Ham to 30 points this term and they sit 12th in the table, four points clear of the relegation zone.

Whilst there is still much work to do for manager David Moyes’ men, the performance against the Hornets at the London Stadium was a welcome tonic following a run of three league games without a win.

Antonio delivered a promising hour before understandably fading towards the end on his full return to action and supporters were largely pleased with his impact from an unfamiliar position.
