West Ham want 24-year-old star and could pay in excess of £20M for him

West Ham United are keen on adding a number of recruits this summer and it appears Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson is one of those high on their list, according to a report in The Guardian.

The media outlet claims the Hammers are interested in the 24-year-old who has impressed for the Swans, despite seeing their side be relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season.

The defender caught the eye of England manager Gareth Southgate, amongst plenty of others at club level, with his performances for Carlos Carvalhal’s side and would have been a strong possibility to head to the World Cup.

However, Mawson has decided against going as he requires surgery for a small problem and is determined to be ready for pre-season, where ever that may be, come July.

The Swans will know they will have a battle on their hands to keep him at the Liberty Stadium and it is expected it could cost the Irons around £20million to bring him to the London Stadium, although they will have to compete with a number of Premier League sides.

That sum of money could be a small price to pay for one of the country’s most promising centre-backs and could allow a partnership between him and Declan Rice the chance to flourish and be solid for the Hammers for a number of years.

West Ham will be looking to make a number of additions this summer, despite an unclear future on who will be at the helm following the World Cup, with David Moyes rumoured to be heading for the exit as talks with Paulo Fonseca continue to happen.
