West Ham name Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher as top summer target

West Ham United are expected to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.

Alphonse Areola is looking like a player past his prime while Lucasz Fabianski is edging closer to his fourth decade.

West Ham could do with an upgrade in the goalkeeping department and have been linked with Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale.

However, the Hammers are now setting their sights on a player who could be a shrewd addition to Graham Potter’s side.

According to Mirror, the Hammers are preparing an audacious move for Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher this summer.

Keen to establish himself as a first-choice keeper, the 26-year-old has been angling for a move away from Liverpool.

Since joining the Reds, he has been forced to play second fiddle to Alisson, and his situation could get worse when Giorgio Mamardashvili returns from his loan spell at Valencia.

Despite his situation, Liverpool manager Arne Slot is a huge fan of Kelleher’s shot-stopping abilities and all-round play.

The Irishman has kept nine clean sheets in 20 games this season, but his chances of displacing Alisson are slim, forcing him to reconsider his future at the club.

If West Ham can get to Kelleher first, the Irishman would be a massive upgrade on Areola, who appears to be in decline as he approaches the twilight of his career.

The 32-year-old has two years left on his contract, but a series of high-profile errors have forced West Ham to enter the market for an upgrade, and Kelleher checks that box.

Kelleher wanted to join Nottingham Forest last summer, but nothing materialised as the Tricky Trees mulled over Liverpool’s £35 million asking price.

Forest have since moved on, signing Matz Sels, who has been a huge addition to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side and is playing a crucial role in their Champions League ambitions.

Without Forest in the mix, West Ham will fancy their chances, but they’ll need a convincing proposal to lure Kelleher to the London Stadium.

The Hammers would fancy a loan, but Liverpool are only interested in a permanent deal.

The Reds have even lowered their valuation to around £20m, and West Ham would be silly not to jump on the deal.
