West Ham manager provides update on Mavropanos after concerning head injury against QPR

West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo has provided an injury update on Konstantinos Mavropanos.

The 28-year-old was stretchered off with a concerning head injury during Sunday’s FA Cup match against Queens Park Rangers.

Mavropanos went down after challenging for a corner in the penalty box in the 39th minute.

The Greece international appeared to be pushed by the Hoops’ goalkeeper before his head struck a defender’s knee on the way down.

After receiving a lengthy medical treatment, he was eventually stretchered off the pitch. He is reported to be conscious following the collision.

The injury delay meant a whopping nine minutes were added on, and Crysencio Summerville scored to put the Irons 1-0 ahead.

Richard Kone’s powerful header levelled the scores in the 65th minute, before Taty Castellanos nodded home Summerville’s cross in extra time to seal victory for the Hammers.

Speaking to the media, Nuno admitted he doesn’t yet know the extent of Mavropanos’ injury but hopes it is not as serious as it first appeared.

“It was a neck injury,” The Portuguese boss told the club’s official website. “We are assessing it now. He’s in pain, and he will need a couple of days to settle down.

“Hopefully, he’s going to be okay.”

Mavropanos began his career in Greece with PAS Giannina before landing a move to Arsenal in 2018.

After making eight appearances for the Gunners, he came to West Ham for a £21 million fee in 2023.

Since arriving in East London, the centre-back has featured 83 times for the Irons.

Mavropanos has also been a key first-team player under Nuno this campaign, playing in 14 Premier League matches.

But he has been part of the backline that has shipped in 43 goals in 21 games.

West Ham currently sit 18th in the league table with seven points away from safety.

They need some big results to boost their chances of survival in the English top-flight.
