West Ham United have held talks with AC Milan over the signing of wide man Alexis Saelemaekers, according to a report from Calciomercato.
The Hammers are keen on bolstering their attacking options and have the Belgian winger on their shortlist.
Milan are ready to sell and have set a €20 million price tag on Saelemaekers following his successful loan spell at Bologna last term.
The 25-year-old was crucial in helping Bologna secure Champions League football for the first time since 1964/65.
After struggling to nail down a starting spot at Milan, Saelemaekers left for the Rossoblu on loan for the 2023/24 season, contributing four goals and two assists in 30 Serie A appearances.
While he struggled to impose himself on the right side of Milan’s flanks, he flourished on the left for Bologna, causing a major threat with his ability to cut inside or go outside. His versatility was also a key asset.
Saelemaekers’ showings have attracted interest from Juventus and the Premier League, where he has a host of suitors.
Besides West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich Town, and Leicester City are also keen on bringing him to England, and the hardworking attacker is open to the change of scenery.
West Ham should steer clear of Saelemaekers
For West Ham, spending €20 million on Saelemaekers is a gamble. While he impressed at Bologna, a single strong loan season doesn’t guarantee success in a more demanding league.
Four goals in 30 Serie A appearances is not impressive, and it is clear to see that his productivity isn’t top-tier. He created only one big chance last year, which doesn’t scream creativity.
In this price range, West Ham could find a more established winger who offers a more consistent goal threat.
The Hammers should focus their efforts elsewhere and avoid overspending on players who might not be the difference-makers they need.
