West Ham United are reportedly considering a move for former Germany international Mats Hummels, according to The Times.
The experienced defender is among a shortlist of options the Hammers are exploring as they look to bolster their defensive ranks following the departures of Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma.
Hummels was released by Borussia Dortmund at the end of last season and has been linked with several clubs, including AS Roma and Real Sociedad.
However, his proposed move to the Italian capital has reportedly hit an impasse over wage demands.
Meanwhile, West Ham want to secure the services of the former Bayern Munich defender and free agent.
The club has also been considering other options like Joel Matip, who was recently released by Liverpool, and John Egan, who left Sheffield United this summer.
West Ham have invested heavily in their defence this summer, signing Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo for a combined fee of £74 million.
However, the club’s recent departures have left them short-staffed at the back, and they could turn to the Bundesliga legend to provide depth.
Hummels would be the perfect fix
A move for Hummels would be a coup for West Ham, but it remains to be seen whether the club can meet his wage demands. A signing of Hummels’ calibre could provide a major boost to their season.
The 2014 World Cup winner has experience winning titles with two of Germany’s biggest clubs. In his prime, he was one of the best defenders of his generation.
His reading of the game is exceptional, and only a few players are better than him at spreading the ball out from the back.
Hummels won the Bundesliga five times. He also claimed three DFB-Pokal titles and four German Super Cups. The Hammers need this sort of player at the club to bring that champion mentality as they bid for a place in European competition.
