West Ham United are on the verge of signing Tammy Abraham from AS Roma, according to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera (page 7).
The Hammers have made a loan offer to the Italian club. West Ham have proposed a loan deal with an obligation to buy the player for around €22 million.
The Serie A side is open to selling the English striker this summer. He did not feature in the recent defeat to Empoli, with Roma manager Daniele De Rossi preferring to rely on Eldor Shomurodov off the bench.
AC Milan had expressed interest in Abraham and offered Alexis Saelemaekers in exchange, but West Ham’s pursuit has gained momentum.
The Irons believe they can agree personal terms with the player despite his high wage demands.
The 26-year-old has been a prolific goalscorer, having played for Chelsea, Bristol City, Swansea City, and Aston Villa. Despite a recent injury setback, he remains a highly sought-after talent.
West Ham’s decision to pursue Abraham may raise eyebrows, given the presence of Niclas Fullkrug and Michail Antonio in their squad. However, the club views Abraham as a long-term investment.
The young striker can take time to adapt to Julen Lopetegui’s football without the immediate pressure to deliver while also serving as a potential successor to Fullkrug and Antonio.
Should West Ham consider loaning Abraham?
The former Chelsea striker will not immediately light up the London Stadium with goals. He has been out with a long-term injury and is still getting up to speed.
Abraham needs to get playing time in his legs, and with Antonio and Fullkrug ahead of him in the pecking order, it might be best to send him on loan somewhere he can play regularly and bang in goals for confidence.
He will return in 2025 ready to play an influential role for the Hammers, possibly taking the mantle from Antonio and Fullkrug, who are entering the twilight of their careers.
