‘There are plenty’ – Moyes provides West Ham transfer update

West Ham United manager David Moyes has admitted the club are trying to sign new players, with the need for addition defenders a priority.

The Hammers supporters have become increasingly frustrated by the lack of additions over the summer, with Tomas Soucek’s permanent acquisition the only ‘new’ face at the London Stadium.

West Ham started the new Premier League season in laboured fashion, being beaten 2-0 at home by Newcastle United in a poor performance on Saturday evening.

With the fans desperate for the club to bring in reinforcements, Moyes has stated the Hammers hierarchy are working on deals.

“I think that defensively we have been short of numbers and the competition that I want so that has been a problem,” the West Ham boss is quoted as saying by the Independent.

“If we get an injury or suspension then we will be really short.

“We are trying to get players in. Let me tell you, there are plenty getting offered. We’re trying to get ones in who will have a similar impact to Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen, people we feel can go forward with us.

“But yes, we want to add to that department.”

West Ham have not added a new right-back this summer, despite Pablo Zabaleta leaving the club at the end of last season, while Aaron Cresswell does not have much competition at left-back.

The Hammers started with Angelo Ogbonna and Issa Diop at the heart of their rearguard against Newcastle, with Fabian Balbuena on the bench.

West Ham have until October 5 to add new faces to their squad, with the potential for another tough season ahead is quality acquisitions are not made.
