West Ham United fans saw their side lose 3-2 to Liverpool on Monday evening, and after the contest they flooded onto social media to offer their sympathies to Lukasz Fabianski, who had a shocker on the night.
The Hammers actually led 2-1 at one point in the second half, prompting dreams among their support that they could pull off the impossible, but they were unable to hold on, and eventually came away from Anfield empty handed.
West Ham went to Merseyside with nothing to lose, but knowing in order to get anything from the game they would need everyone to be at their best, but unfortunately Fabianski chose the wrong night to make some costly errors.
The first of those came for the opening Liverpool goal, when he was unable to stop Reds midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum from finding the net, and then a catastrophic mistake from the Hammers stopper later in the night saw Mo Salah level the scores.
Fabianski also didn’t cover himself in glory for what turned out to be the winner either, which condemned West Ham to defeat, coming out of his goal and failing to get to the ball, and saw himself present Sadio Mane with an empty net to find.
Hammers fans were right to be disappointed with the performance of their goalkeeper, but they were all too aware that he has been one of their best players this term, in what has been a season for struggle.
Although his mistakes were critical on the night, the West Ham supporters will know that they are likely to need their stopper in top form again if they are going to survive.
That might explain why plenty of Hammers fans showed a sympathetic side to themselves when reflecting on his display on social media.
