West Ham United are interested in signing Arsenal defender Calum Chambers and are pressing forward with a deal to land him after missing out on James Tarkowski, according to The Telegraph.
The Hammers have been in the market for defensive reinforcements this summer but as yet there has not been any progress on bringing new faces to the London Stadium.
West Ham have offloaded a host of first-team players to raise money, with the club’s hierarchy stating that this will be reinvested to balance the squad.
Chambers is an interesting target for the Hammers, with the Arsenal defender having a hot and cold time of it in North London since moving from Southampton in 2014.
The 25-year-old has been capped by England and shown the versatility to play at centre-half and right-back, but the reported West Ham target has also been culpable in making costly mistakes in recent years.
With Chambers unlikely to command a regular place in the Arsenal side this season, the Hammers could benefit by offering him regular football in East London.
His versatility would be an asset for David Moyes’ men, with West Ham short of options at both centre-half and right-back.
The report suggests a potential loan deal could be on the cards, while a fee of £12 million is touted for a possible permanent transfer.
West Ham have until October 25 to sign new players and need reinforcements after losing both of their opening Premier League games.
