Report: West Ham plot move for attractive defensive option

West Ham United are weighing up a summer move for Rangers defender Connor Goldson, according to the Football Insider website.

The Hammers are known to be actively looking for central defensive options, with numbers available to David Moyes nowhere near as high as he needs them to be, if they are to continue to sustain themselves as a Premier League outfit.

West Ham have been switching between Issa Diop, Fabian Balbuena and Angelo Ogbonna to get them through this term, and although Winston Reid has been on the bench in recent outings, he hasn’t actually featured for the club since March 2018.

One defender the Hammers are said to be interested in is the former Brighton man Goldson, a player who has established himself as a regular in a Rangers outfit who are doing great things both in Scotland and on the European scene.

The 27-year-old has virtually been an ever present at Ibrox this term, and is said to be very much on the West Ham hit list when it comes to strengthening their defensive options.

Moyes is currently utilising Aaron Cresswell as a third centre-back when he uses a different formation, but that is probably not a long-term solution, so clearly another player needs to be brought in eventually.

Goldson has another two years left on his deal in Scotland beyond the end of this season, which means that the Hammers are likely to have to pay a proper fee for him.

Rangers are understood to value their asset at £6 million, which actually wouldn’t break the bank for West Ham by any stretch of the imagination.

The need for another defender to come in for the Hammers was perfectly evident on Wednesday night, when they were humbled 4-1 by Leicester City, in a match where they were defensively poor for much of the contest, and Goldson could be the man to make the difference.
