Report: West Ham make offer to PL rivals for defender

West Ham United have made a bid to Leicester City for youngster Calvin Ughelumba as they look to strengthen their defensive options, according to the Football Insider website.

The Hammers have been desperate to bolster their stock, as they plot a way to escape from the immediate threat of relegation to the Championship, but have been unable to land anyone in what is a key area for them.

West Ham have now identified the Leicester youngster as someone who could be of use to them, with the 20-year-old believed to be a rising star who is expected to have a big future in the game.

The Foxes rate Ughelumba highly, with him putting in a series of positive displays for their under-18 and under-23 sides, but the pathway through to the first-team at the King Power Stadium looks a blocked one with Ben Chilwell and Christian Fuchs both options in that position, while summer signing James Justin can also be accommodated there.

West Ham will be hoping that their quicker route to senior football will be able to lure him to the London Stadium, where his career can take off with only Arthur Masuaku ahead of him, with Aaron Cresswell being utilised as an extra centre-back.

David Moyes is keen on taking the versatile defender to the Hammers before the transfer window closes, and has tabled a bid accordingly, although there are no indications that terms between the two clubs have yet been agreed.
