Report: West Ham close on impressive defender, £4.6m fee

West Ham United are closing in on a deal for Besiktas centre-half Domagoj Vida, with Takvim stating a transfer is set to be complete.

The Hammers have not hid the fact they want new defenders in the current transfer window, with manager Dave Moyes admitting that the search for reinforcements is ongoing.

West Ham clearly have a limited budget to spend this summer and the going has been tough, with no new faces arriving at the London Stadium so far.

The latest report suggests Besiktas are happy to get Vida off their wage bill and are willing to sell the veteran Croatia international to the Hammers for a fee of €5 million (£4.6 million).

Should West Ham get a deal for the enforcer over the line, the London Stadium side would be signing a vastly experienced operator who has featured for his country in a World Cup final.

The Hammers currently have Angelo Ogbonna, Fabien Balbuena and Issa Diop as options at centre-half and Vida would certainly provide competition for places if he signs for the London club.

West Ham manager Moyes has admitted that injuries or suspensions could see the need to push Declan Rice back into the rearguard due to a lack of alternative options.

The transfer window closes on October 5, with the Hammers supporters having their fingers crossed a number of new faces arrive at the club before then.
