West Ham United icon Frank McAvennie has stated that ‘nobody wants to come’ to the club this summer, while he has urged his former employers to drop reported interest in James Tarkowski.
Tomas Soucek’s permanent acquisition has been the only piece of incoming business at the London Stadium this summer, with the fans left exasperated by the lack of signings by the Hammers hierarchy.
With the transfer deadline quickly approaching and West Ham starting the season with a home defeat to Newcastle United, the need for reinforcements is clear.
The Hammers have been involved in a public pursuit of Tarkowski for a few weeks, but have seemingly been priced out of a move for the Burnley central defender.
McAvennie has given his honest opinion on West Ham’s transfer woes and stated that the club should move on to other targets in their hunt for a new defensive addition.
“The biggest problem we have got at the moment is that nobody wants to come to West Ham,” the ex Hammers told Football Insider.
“They are talking about the big boy at Burnley but I do not think that he wants to go.
“If he does not want to go to West Ham, it does not matter if the club bid £50 million and Burnley say, ‘You are going.’ That is not going to be the player that you want.
“If he does not want to go there, he is only going because he has been kicked out of Burnley for the money.
“I do not understand why they are still going after him? I cannot understand it. Go and get somebody else.”
West Ham’s options at the back are limited and David Moyes has recently stated that if the club was to receive injuries or suspensions to defenders, the team could be in a precarious position.
Pablo Zabaleta has left the club but no right-back replacement has been signed by the Hammers, while the club’s supporters have been critical of Aaron Cresswell at left-back.
West Ham have until October 5 to sign new players, with the fans having their collective fingers crossed that new faces arrive at the London Stadium to bolster Moyes’ squad.
