West Ham United defender Winston Reid is set for a loan spell away in the MLS, as he bids to revive his career which has stalled at the London Stadium due to injury.
Even though the Hammers are flirting dangerously close to the drop zone in the Premier League, manager David Moyes is prepared to allow the New Zealand international to leave the club, with him having three central defensive options to call upon.
Reid has not featured for West Ham since 2018 because of a mountain of injury problems, and with doubts over whether he will ever be able to get back to his best, the Kiwi is set for a stint at an unnamed MLS club, to try and build up some fitness when their season gets underway next month.
It did look like the 31-year-old could be ready for a Hammers comeback, when he featured for the club in pre-season, but even though he has been on the bench in Premier League games over the last few weeks, he is yet to see any game time for the senior team, and that doesn’t appear likely to change any time soon.
Moyes confirmed the potential move when he addressed the media ahead of West Ham taking on Liverpool in the top flight on Wednesday evening.
“Winston Reid is going to join a club in America on loan, everything being well. I don’t want to give you a club just now, he’s got to get through a medical and a few other things.” Football.London quotes him as saying.
Assuming everything goes smoothly with a medical and that Reid does join the unnamed MLS club, it will be interesting to see if there is a Hammers future for him, or whether he is off out to America to put himself in the shop window for broader horizons down the line.
