European press say West Ham interested in former player

Newcastle United midfielder Mohamed Diame could be set for a sensational return to West Ham United, according to Turkey media outlet Sabah.

The Senegal international, who had a two-year spell with the Hammers from 2012-2014, is available on a free transfer next month when his contract at St James’ Park expires.

Diame joined West Ham from Wigan Athletic and scored seven times in 75 appearances in all competitions before being allowed to join Hull City in September 2014 in a £3.5million deal.

Fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace are also interested in the powerful midfielder as are Turkish side Fenerbahce, who are said to have made the 31-year-old a very generous offer that dwarfs that made by the Hammers and the Eagles.

Diame has been with Newcastle since August 2016 and had made over a century of appearances for the Magpies; including playing an integral part of Rafa Benitez’s squad that won the Championship in 2017.

The Paris-born player has made 29 outings this season as the Tyneside club successfully retained their Premier League status for another year but the midfielder has been in and out of the side since the turn of the year and has only completed a full 90 minutes twice – one of which was the 4-0 win over Fulham on the final day of the campaign.

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini is looking to bolster his squad this summer and there possibly could be an overhaul taking place at the Olympic Stadium this summer.

With interest in Declan Rice and rumours of Pedro Obiang wanting to leave, the Hammers could be keeping tabs on Diame in case outgoing during the post-season leaves them short in the midfield department.

The 4-1 win over Watford on the final day of the season saw West Ham finish a respectable tenth place in the Premier League table.
