A move to West Ham United would have tempted Anderlecht’s Leander Dendoncker to leave the Belgian outfit, although they had left the possibility of a deal too late, the player has stated.
The midfielder was heavily linked with a move to the Hammers over the January transfer window, with Watford also rumoured to be interested in a potential switch.
West Ham target Dendoncker has already established himself as a first-team regular for his current side and has been attracting attention from a host of clubs in the past.
It is believed he is ready to move on from Anderlecht and is eyeing up the Premier League as his preferred destination to push his level to the next level.
However, Dendoncker acknowledged it would have been very difficult for him to complete a move to West Ham when they had left it until the last minute.
“If deals still have to be arranged in the evening on January 31, there is little chance that there will be a breakthrough,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws.
“West Ham seemed to me, however, a nice club to take the next step in my career.”
It is thought that Anderlecht was not prepared to entertain such a move at the last minute, as they had not brought anyone in as a replacement during the transfer window – and as such ended the possibility of him move to West Ham.
Dendoncker has been looking to leave the Belgium outfit since last summer when he was refused the chance to leave despite interest from the Premier League.
For West Ham, the failed transfer is another massive frustration for the fans and leaves David Moyes short of options currently in midfield.
The saga around the transfer is reminiscent of the club’s botched attempts to land William Carvalho and the Hammers hierarchy surely have a lot to answer for as the side struggle to reach their potential on the pitch.
