‘Always a cup final’ – West Ham idol sends warning message to Tottenham

Former West Ham United striker Carlton Cole has suggested that the upcoming match away to Tottenham Hotspur could be the game which turns their season around.

The Hammers are in the middle of a horrible run of form at present, winning just one of their last nine matches after Wednesday’s loss to Manchester City, and picking up only five points from 27 in that time.

That has seen West Ham drop into the bottom three, and with a trip to leaders Liverpool next up for them, the situation is beginning to look a little bleak it must be said.

The Hammers do have a home game against Southampton to follow that, but it is the one after that against rivals Tottenham that Cole believes could spark a turnaround in their fortunes.

“You’ve seen the run-up we’ve got coming up, but I think the Spurs game might turn it around for us,” Cole told Sky Sports.

“The Spurs game is always a cup final. We’ll look at Southampton at home definitely. The Spurs game, if we can turn it on for that game, we’ll be in and around it.”

West Ham actually have a decent recent record against Tottenham, having won four and drawn one of their last 10 battles, including a win at Spurs’ new stadium last term, but it looks like they could be under all sorts of pressure to win that match.

The Hammers have not won in the Premier League since the opening day of 2020, and in that time they have gone out of the FA Cup to Championship side West Bromwich Albion, so confidence is likely to be low at the London Stadium.

Tottenham are not going great guns themselves under Jose Mourinho at present, so there is every chance Cole could be correct in his prediction. West Ham fans will certainly hope so.
