West Ham United have been linked with a move for Callum Wilson this summer following his Newcastle United departure.
The England international is a free agent, and the Hammers were eyeing an opportunity to snap him up.
However, Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq have thrown a wrench in those plans for West Ham.
Per Ben Jacobs, “Al-Ettifaq are exploring a move for Callum Wilson. Nothing advanced yet, but the Newcastle striker is firmly on Ettifaq’s radar.”
Wilson is a top striker on his day, but injuries hampered his time at Newcastle.
Unfortunately, he managed only 18 Premier League appearances last term, with most coming off the bench.
Wilson’s best season in Tyneside was back in 2022/23 when he bagged 18 goals in 31 appearances. He has not been able to replicate those numbers.
It made no sense that West Ham entered the race to sign the former Bournemouth striker. Al-Ettifaq’s consideration of a move for Wilson is a blessing in disguise for the Hammers (View).
West Ham sniffing around Wilson reeks of short-term thinking. He is a fading name, not a forward solution.
Let Al-Ettifaq have him. The Hammers should be aiming higher, not picking through Premier League leftovers.
There are younger, more exciting strikers on the market for West Ham to snap up.
The Hammers should be looking at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise ace Franjo Ivanovic, Wycombe Wanderers star Richard Kone, and Rennes man Arnaud Kalimuendo.
If West Ham cannot afford to sign any of these names, the Irons should consider a loan swoop for one of Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson or Darwin Nunez of Liverpool.
Wilson is not worth the punt for West Ham right now.
