West Ham United’s Premier League survival hopes took a severe blow on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten 3-0 by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, a result that plunges Nuno Espirito Santo’s side deeper into a relegation battle with just three fixtures remaining.
Konstantinos Mavropanos set the tone for a miserable afternoon when he turned the ball into his own net on 15 minutes, before Igor Thiago converted a penalty on 54 minutes and Mikkel Damsgaard added a third eight minutes from time to leave the Hammers’ top-flight status hanging by a thread.
In truth, West Ham were second-best for large portions of the contest, and Mateus Fernandes’ display was a rare positive.
The midfielder has been one of the Premier League’s breakout players since signing from Southampton in August 2025.
He completed 42 of his 50 passes, including six from 10 long-ball attempts, made three interceptions and won nine of his 12 ground duels.
Fernandes has recorded five goals and four assists across 39 matches this term and carries the kind of profile that suggests he is playing well above his surroundings with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly eyeing a summer move.
With just three league games remaining, West Ham must now face Arsenal, Newcastle United and Leeds United, knowing that further dropped points could see them drop into the Championship.
The cruel irony for supporters is that the one player capable of dragging them to safety is precisely the one they will almost certainly lose, whatever the outcome.
