Fixture schedule gives West Ham key edge in relegation fight with Spurs

The margins at the bottom of the Premier League table are razor-thin, and with just a handful of fixtures remaining, every variable matters.

West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur are locked in a desperate scrap for survival, separated by just two points. Over the next three matchdays, the Hammers hold a scheduling advantage that could prove decisive.

In each of those three rounds, West Ham will kick off before Spurs after the North Londoners’ matchday 37 clash against Chelsea was postponed. That might sound like a minor detail, but in the high-pressure environment of a relegation battle, it is anything but.

The side that plays first has the power to set the terms. Should Nuno Espirito Santo’s men collect all three points, as they did in their hard-earned 2–1 victory over Everton on Saturday, they hand the psychological baton directly to their rivals.

Spurs, knowing exactly what they need before a ball is even kicked, face the kind of pressure that can crack teams far more settled than the one currently sitting in 18th place.

There is context beyond the fixtures, too. West Ham appear to be finding form at precisely the right moment. Their win over Everton was not a fluent, dominant performance, but it was the hallmark of a side developing the mentality required to stay up.

Spurs, meanwhile, ground out a narrow 1–0 win at Wolves but remain a deeply fragile outfit. Roberto De Zerbi’s side have struggled for consistency all season, and the weight of expectation in a must-win environment does not suit them.

Three times over the coming weeks, West Ham will have the chance to bank maximum points and watch Spurs sweat afterwards. Even draws could be enough if Spurs stumble under the pressure of needing to match West Ham’s tally each time.

The fixture list has done West Ham a favour; now it is down to the players to make it count.
